The light-harvesting complex (or antenna complex; LH or LHC) is an array of protein and chlorophyll molecules embedded in the thylakoid membrane of plants and cyanobacteria, which transfer light energy to one chlorophyll a molecule at the reaction center of a photosystem. The antenna pigments are predominantly chlorophyll b, xanthophylls, and carotenes. 2011-09-20 · In photosynthetic bacteria, these two steps are carried out in the large membrane protein assembly called the photosynthetic core complex. There are two main constituent proteins in the core complex: light-harvesting complex I (LH1) and the reaction center (RC). Carl von Linné Weg 10, 50829, Köln, Germany Its evolutionary history makes photosynthesis well suited for synthetic biology strategies. The evolutionary diversification of the photosynthetic machinery has provided a set of building blocks, ranging from single proteins such as the soluble electron transporters (plastocyanin, cytochrome c 6, flavodoxin, and ferredoxin) to multiprotein complexes like photosystems and antenna complexes Photosynthetic complex I is a key element in photosynthetic electron transport, but little has been known about it so far.

There are two main constituent proteins in the core complex: light-harvesting complex I (LH1) and the reaction center (RC). The light absorption processes associated with photosynthesistake place in large protein complexes known as photosystems. The one known as Photosystem I contains a chlorophylldimer with an absorption peak at 700 nm known as P700. Photosystems are functional and structural units of protein complexes involved in photosynthesis that together carry out the primary photochemistry of photosynthesis: the absorption of light and the transfer of energy and electrons. The photosynthetic unit includes the reaction centers (RC 1 and RC 2) and the light-harvesting complexes which contribute to evolution of one O 2 molecule. The light-harvesting complexes, that greatly expand the absorptance capacity of the reactions, have evolved along three principal lines. This membrane protein complex plays a major role in dynamically rewiring photosynthesis.
