The temporal fossa is a shallow depression on the temporal lines and one of the be massive marks on the skull. The occipital bones, including, temporal bone, sphenoid bone, parietal bone and the frontal bone put up to its concave wall. It is superior to the infratemporal fossa and terminating beneath the level of the zygomatic arch. The posterior part of the fossa is formed by the parietal and squamous temporal bones (see Chapter 5: The Skull). The ethmoid bone is completely hidden by the maxilla and nasal bones (and part of the frontal bones), indeed the ethmoid and maxilla form a double wall, which we shall return to when we describe the maxillary sinus of the rat. middle cranial fossa An irregular depression in the middle of the inner surface of the base of the skull.

The temporal bone forms the lower lateral side of the skull (see Figure 7.5). Common wisdom has it that the temporal bone (temporal = “time”) is so named because this area of the head (the temple) is where hair typically first turns gray, indicating the passage of time. The temporal bone is subdivided into several regions (Figure 7.7). The flattened, upper portion is the squamous portion of the temporal bone. The middle cranial fossa supports the temporal lobes of the brain and forms the outer walls of the orbits.
